Am trying to figure out how to find out what the motherboard is on someones computer. They have no paperwork (it was built for themm by a relative) and they are not happy to take the side off to look. Any other way? Reason is wanting to know how much RAM it will support to see if more can be added as 'puta is very slow. Currently has 488 Mb being recognized! Help!

Lavalys Everest Home, but this free version is not supported anymore (hence the download link):

I find Lavalys's Everest is an excellent tool for identifying components on a computer.

It'll be the one with the tea and biscuits on a tray0

us the system checker on the crucial memory website it scans the pc tells you what board is inside, how many slots are in there and what memory configuration it has everything you need to know0

Thanks to you all for your prompt replies. I'll offer your suggestions and hope we can move forward. And what's more I've learnt something too. Perfect! Or should I say Purfick!:T0

Tell them to stop being a pansy and take the side panel off - unless they are a complete muppet and decide to poke a drill in there afterwards they aren't going to damage anything.0

Absolutely right - it's going to be damn tricky fitting extra ram in through the cooling slots
Tell them to be sensible or stop wasting your time.0 -
While the side is off you can take the opportunity to clean out all the fluff and dust, esp round the fans. Golden opportunity not to be missed
