Asus Repairs

Just wondering if anybody has experienced the Asus warranty repair service and how fast it is.

The story is I purchased an Asus UX32a Ultrabook in October 2012 and all has been good with it until a week ago. I was using it and a screen came on which would not let me do anything, I called Asus and they said it looked like the hard drive had failed and booked for a courier to collect.

They collected on Tuesday this week (due to Bank Holiday) which I was happy with. Just now I have had a text to say it is being delivered back by DPD (the courier who collected it) tomorrow. No other information/email at all.

The cynic in me thinks it has not been repaired so quickly so just wondered if they are really that good with warranty repairs.

Many thanks for reading

You could have posted this after you received the machine. Then you could have given us the answer too.
  • I will post back when I receive the machine if all is well and it is fixed as I will be mighty impressed at the turnaround time of repair.

I was posting on the off-chance somebody on the forum had experienced a repair from Asus and it was in fact so quick to sort out.

I have emailed them to enquire if it has been repaired or not under warranty but I expect I will have received it back by the time I get a reply.

The only correspondence I have had is a text from DPD saying my machine is on it's way back so I don't know whether it is fixed.

    No need for sarcasm Nifty:D

If it was a dead hard drive it would probably only taken an tech a few minutes to take the old one out, pop a new one in and then a little while to do some tests.

The likes of Asus/Dell have the ability to basically setup a hard drive for one of their machines in advance/on the day using disc imaging software on a normal PC or specialist machine (depending on how many discs they're setting up), so it's extremely fast compared to installing windows from scratch.

And to give you an idea of what's involved, with changing the HDD in most laptops it's a case of undoing a small access panel (usually 1 or 2 screws), undoing 2-4 screws holding the drive in place, and pulling it out.

I can do a reinstall/new HDD on a laptop or PC in a couple of hours, using the manufacturers supplied disks*, and using a disc image setup (which is what the manufacturers will do), is even faster as it requires no human input once you start it off, you just basically bung the fresh drive into the machine with the software, tell it the disc image to use, and walk away until it's done (then you just take the drive out of that machine, and put it in the laptop/PC it's intended for)

In short I can see them getting it fixed in under a day if they're not too busy, and it is just a dead HDD, as even on laptops a dead HDD is a simple enough fix (unlike say a dead screen, or problems with overheating/video etc).

*Take that up to 3-5 hours if I'm having to use a generic Windows XP disk, and hunting around for the drivers as I go (Vista and 7/8 install far faster than XP)

If it was just a failed hard drive, that's a 10 minute job on most laptops. Then they'll need to re-install Windows which they'll almost certainly do from a pre-made image on a DVD or a build server, so maximum of an hour.
  • Thanks for both of your replies.

I had heard the usual horror stories of waiting for over a month and the guy on the helpline when booking the repair stated 14 working days, hence my surprise at the quick turnaround.

Hopefully it will be back working tomorrow:)

I will update when I know.

    Thanks again

  • Just a quick update.

My laptop is back working from ASUS.

I am really impressed at the time taken. They collected by DPD on Tuesday last week and it was delivered back by DPD on the Friday morning.

The only pain now is reinstalling all my programs etc.

    Thanks for your help

is worth a look for re-installing all the common software in one go.
