Can benefits be claimed with no fixed address?

Hi

Just a quick query to help a friend. Does anyone know if it causes any problems with payment of benefits if someone has no fixed address at present? He is staying at friends houses until he sorts his own place.

My friend says he cannot claim in this situation. Does anybody have first hand experience of this.

thanks in advance

He can give his friends address when he makes his claim if that is acceptable to the friend, dependant on how long he expects to stay there they would need to inform Council tax dept and the friend would need to inform relevant Dept for any benefits he recieves that someone else is living in the house ( it wouldn't actually affect what he gets though as they are not a couple)

He can claim and put the address down as care of as far as I'm aware. They should assess him and process the claim regardless and once sorted inform them of new address. He can write the circumstances on a seperate sheet and attach if that would help or there maybe a blank section on the form for him to do this.

Slight word of caution if where he is staying is on benefits I think his claim may affect them. They may need to notify someone but I'm not sure. It's worth looking into though so benefits don't think there's anything suspicious going on!

I think it may depend on the benefit - I believe you used to be able to claim Pension Credit if you were of 'no fixed abode' providing you could either provide a 'care of' address to receive post, or alternatively go to your local Job Centre.

People of "no fixed abode" can claim some benefits, ask at the Job Centre.
