Can work force me to pay for parking?

RHIP (Rank Has Its Privileges) hence why the managers get the free parking spaces and the grunts get to pay for the public one across the road. Twas ever thus and till the revolution, will ever be so!
Certainly in the current climate you have virtually no chance of getting the public sector to give you £500 extra per year to cover your work place parking costs (which most people would have to cover). In this instance its a cost of getting to that role and comes as a package - don't like paying for parking, then you need to find another job that pays better or doesn't require expensive parking. They hold the cards here as I suspect inability to drive due to lack of car availability would quickly become a capability issue and lead to dismissal if the field based role requires you to get out and about.Adventure before Dementia!0 -
The OP is field based, so that might make her job a bit difficult

in that case she's being paid for the car and she either gets sufficient allowance to cover it of tax relief in lieu of it.
Most field based workers could easily find another £2/day in their paperwork if they looked hard enough0 -
So the Bosses who can more afford the parking get it free.

I am currently employed in a public sector field based role.
I have been told that I must use my car for work purposes, which is fine by me.
However they are also telling me that I must pay for the Car park across the road, which is £40 a month.
There are some spaces in the rear yard which are used by senior managers, who are not required to use their cars. They get this for free.
I have contested this at work, and have been told that because I am young my car for work, I must also pay up to 500 a year to use this...surely this can't be right? What's being young got to do with it? Are you hoping to claim some kind of age discrimination?
I presumed that 'young' in the first post has been auto-corrected and should read 'using' which would make more sense?
Just a thought!
Anyway, OP, if you are in a union then take it to them to sort out.
If you are obliged to use your car for work then you may be given an allowance for parking near to work along with a mileage allowance.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily Dickinson

Double check your contract as you should have an essential car users allowance which you might well find covers it, especially if you don't go over the 10,000 mile limit for tax purposes and/or have an economical car.
If its a local council owned car park and you have a low emission car (VED Band C or lower) you might find they do a discount on season tickets. Winchester City Council does - 75% for band A and 50% for bands B and C.
I work in the public sector too and don't get parking paid for unless its on a business trip and is £5 or more a shot (although I am not an essential car user). I do drive to work in my eco Ibiza but I get the parking discount so its much cheaper (£100 a quarter) or I just take my bike - motorbikes park for free :cool:I don't like chick flicks, I get grazed knuckles doing my own car repairs and I ride a massive cruiser motorbike. To many this makes me a bloke in disguise but to my husband this makes me perfect

I'm guessing you didn't read all the posts and #9 in particular?
I was making a presumption about the OP's post, which I know someone else has also made - but it's a presumption so I may be wrong.
