Can work force me to pay for parking?

I am currently employed in a public sector field based role.
I have been told that I must use my car for work purposes, which is fine by me.
However they are also telling me that I must pay for the Car park across the road, which is £40 a month.
There are some spaces in the rear yard which are used by senior managers, who are not required to use their cars. They get this for free.
I have contested this at work, and have been told that because I am young my car for work, I must also pay up to 500 a year to use this...surely this can't be right?

What mileage rate do you get for your work use? Is the parking cost built in to that? Can the parking cost be set against tax - necessary for undertaking your duties? Is the provision of a car by you in a contract?

I used to have to use a pool car for my work, and on occasion I had to turn down the one provided for safety reasons (e.g. bald tyre). It was quite satisfying then telling the company that I would not be using my own car to visit the managers at head office as I was not insured. Agreements shouldn't be one-sided.

a lot of people need a car for work duties, and need to pay parking, especially in cities, including me. Nothing that unusual here. I assume you are only paying at your main place of work, and can claim expenses if for example you need to go and work in another town/city and pay for parking there

My husband is also a public sector worker who uses his car for work. He has to pay car parking at his base office but if he is at another location on official business then he can reclaim the cost of parking there.

What's being young got to do with it? Are you hoping to claim some kind of age discrimination?

How often are you in the office, is it not possible to park elsewhere whilst you are there (or get public transport, if you are not field based on the same days)?

Tell them that you don't have a car any more and simply leave it at home.

The OP is field based, so that might make her job a bit difficult

Normal I'm afraid. Parking for work related visits can usually be claimed but to park at Head Office (or equivalent) you would normally have to pay if it is not provided FOC.
