For your needs I would suggest Hyde, around the Lumn Road area you should get a reasonable terrace for your budget. There are two train stations and one bus station, within walking distance, to get you to the centre of Manchester.

A good Town centre, Morrisons & Asda all within easy walking distance. There are a number of Real Ale pubs if that is your thing, I lived there for more than 20 years and rarely saw any trouble.

If you are determined to travel to work by car it is just 8 miles into the centre, although the M67/A57 are busy roads during rush hour. If you are set on driving you could move a little closer and try Denton.

Are you looking for furnished or unfurnished?

I personally don't agree with the people saying that you can't get much for £450 it just depends what you want. If you want a nice furnished 2 bed flat ready to move in near the city centre then I do agree you wouldn't get much for £450. My friend just moved out of a furnished 1 bed which was £415 and moved into a 2 bed flat in the same building for £550 and that's not even the city centre. However I live in an unfurnished 2 bed terrace around the corner from her which is £475 a month (it's a bit more expensive than most of the terraces around here because it's a bit more modern inside than a lot of them).

There are lots of terraces around this price in Gorton/Openshaw/Abbey Hey/Clayton etc and it's not the poshest of areas but it's definitely not the worst area of Manchester I've lived in (I've lived in about 6 different areas and worked in a few others too). I don't know many of the areas that other people have mentioned as these are mainly outside of Manchester - but the suggestions make sense because I do know that if you go slightly outside of Manchester you can probably get something a bit nicer (or at least a nicer area) for your money, it just depends whether you mind a bit of a longer journey to work.

You mention Stalybridge - I don't know it very well but I think it's a fairly nice, quiet area and again it's slightly out of Manchester which might/might not be a problem depending on what kind of commute you expect.

Oh and does anyone know if we're ok to name letting agents to avoid on these forums? I had a VERY bad experience with one so would hate you to go with that one - I can inbox you the name if needed.
