Should I pay for replacement when item is faulty

I bought a Garmin GPS 2 years ago. The corners of the keys have started to appear white at the corners. After communication with Garmin, they have offered me a replacement but I have to pay £82.80 as it is out of it's warranty. Is this correct or should they replace it for free as it is defective?

So the buttons have completely stopped working and it no longer functions at all as a navigator?

Did you buy the thing direct from Garmin?
If not, they are correct. They only have to deal with you within the terms of their warranty.

You do however have statutory rights with whoever sold the goods to you.

Have a read of MSE's Consumer Rights article for details.

Do come back if anything is unclear.

The buttons do work but in time if the white continues to grow I won't be able to read the buttons.

How many buttons are affected? Do you use hand cream by any chance?

All the buttons are affected. I use the device from and hour to 6 hours at a time so hand cream shouldn't cause the problem, I think. I didn't buy the product from Garmin so should I be taking up my case with the shop I bought it from?

Read the link wealdroam gave above and then ask any follow up questions.

    Yes.

As I said earlier, Garmin owe you nothing.

But read that article I linked to, together with MSE's How to Complain, before doing anything further.
