I know that he passed the assessment last year but has failed the most recent one which was a few months ago, and is currently waiting to go to a tribunal.
Which indicates he is on appeal and he is sending in sicknotes from a doctor. His rate should be £71.70 a week whilst on appeal. If he wins the appeal he will get backdated money to top it up to £100.15 a week.
I have seen a letter stating that he is in the WRAG part of ESA
This letter must have been dated a year ago if he failed the most recent assessment.

He MUST attend any WCA medical assessments, if he does not he will be asked why he did not and if the reason is not good enough his money WILL be stopped. I am not aware of any exceptions on this rule for people with mental health problems.

I should imagine that being an inpatient in hospital is good cause for not attending. ESA can be paid for up to 52 weeks while a person is an inpatient in hospital (long stays for mentally ill patients are not uncommon) and that would likely overlap any possible date for an ATOS WCA.

You did not cover anything I did not cover, "he must attend any WCA or money will stop until good cause has been considered"

Obviously if he is in hospital he should contact ATOS & should inform DWP of his stay in hospital and get the WCA cancelled or alternatives agreed with ATOS, and if ATOS does not cancel, would have to apply for good cause afterwards.

The inference was that whilst he was not in hospital he could nonchalantly just decide not to go to a WCA and it was on this premise that the answers in the thread were given. So the OP could be in no doubt about that.

He won't be having any WCA anyway because he is on appeal.
