Direct Debit Cancelled but British Gas Still Taking Payments.

Hi Joyful.
I see in your signature it says you work for British Gas. Is that true?
If that's so then you would know if or not they are telling the truth. When they say that whenever a direct debit is set up for a customer.I was told they never put a customers bank details in the direct debit letter of confirmation, they send out to the customer.
If that's true, then that means my bank account is safe, as that other customer does not have my bank details.
British Gas complaints department say they have now deleted my bank details off their database. So no I should not get any more direct debits from British Gas.
But I cannot help thinking about what Wyth said- That the bank should be doing more to protect my account from unauthorized access. As I clearly stated to both my bank and British Gas that I don't want no more direct debits from British Gas. I want to pay by cash only.
Yes this has had an effect on my mental health, because it has caused me all this worry and distress. And I am still worried. As I don't want to have to keep fighting with my bank every week to get my money back. Because British Gas keep setting up direct debits by mistake. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Yes I work for BG and what you have been advised is correct. As the bank have the authority to pay you back if a Direct debit is taken incorrectly then that is all they have to do. There is no need for them to do anything else.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0

Thanks for letting us know that Joyful.
So if any other member here has a problem with British Gas at least they know there will be some here to help them.
As I do believe there is also a Scottish Power rep, who is also one of the moderators of this forum. So there should also be a rep for British Gas. as a lot of people are with British Gas for their energy supply.
So now I will do what you and others have advised me here. That it to check my bank account about once a week and see how it is. If no more payments get taken in the next 2 months I can assume it's all right. if however they do which see unlikely to happen now. Then I will have to go back to tell British Gas. But it looks like this problem is being solved. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

There is a British Gas Representative with permission to post on MSE

Company representatives with permission to post are not moderators. In fact this site has no moderators, and company representatives with permission to post actually have reduced posting rights compared to Joe Public0 -
That's interesting.
But if there's no moderators, there must be admins who moderate the forum and delete inappropriate posts.
As every forum has at least 1 or 2 admins who control the forum.
Anyway it seems there is not much more I can do now except just keep checking my account.
I hope British Gas have got it right this time, and that they won't take any more payments out of my account. Because I don't want any more direct debits from British Gas.
It is a horrible experience for me, but I do feel better venting off here. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I can confirm that we have permission to post on this forum but we are not a moderator. Thanks David“Official Company Representative
I am the official company representative of Scottish Power. MSE has given permission for me to post in response to queries about the company, so that I can help solve issues. You can see my name on the companies with permission to post list. I am not allowed to tout for business at all. If you believe I am please report it to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com This does NOT imply any form of approval of my company or its products by MSE"0 -
Well yesterday I went to my appointment with the bank manager at my local branch. It turned out she could not see me after all. Because something else came up and she could not leave the fron desk. though she spoke to me at the desk and I told her that British Gas told me that they have now removed my bank details from their database. I also apologized to the bank manager for screaming and shouting in the bank the other day.
The bank manager told me that if any more direct debits get taken without my consent the bank will refund me. But at the moment no more direct debits from British Gas have been taken.I just hope this has been sorted and British gas have removed my bank details from the database as they said they did.But I don't know because I cannot see their database.
I would like to close that current account but if I do that I was told that if I wanted to open a new one I would have to have another credit check.I was also told if I just closed my account today for example,I would be charged for being overdrawn for any direct debits that are due to come out. Also if I close that account I would need another current account to replace it and if I fail the credit check.Meaning the bank would then refuse me another current account,I could find myself without a current account and I don't want that. So I am kind of tied to that bank account. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
