Paypal email

sorry if this is the wrong board!

I've had a strange email from paypal saying that they have attempted to cancel the direct debit on my current account. I rang them to ask if it was genuine. The response was that they would not send such an email but as it had my full name and the last digits of my bank account number, it probably was from them. The header looked genuine enough and it did not contain any links.

Any ideas please?

On the face of it, it sounds genuine.

If you check your current account do you have anything that looks like "JPMC ref paypal" setup as a direct debit? That's normally their DD identifier. Not sure why they'd cancel it out of the blue though.

I understand that direct debits are cancelled if they are not used for 13 months.

I had a PayPal direct debit that I hadn't used for a couple of years, then I tried to use it, to transfer some money from PayPal to my bank account.

The request was refused by my bank, as the direct debit had been cancelled due to lack of use.

Just wondering, if you haven't used the direct debit for a while, something similar might have happened.

doesnt make sense for paypal to cancel dd, only your bank would usually do this if a dd has been inactive for a long time.

might be worth posting a message on paypal forum for the answer
  • You could forward the email to Paypal ... They're quite good at getting back if it's a spoof email

    Spoof@paypal.com

    Hope this helps
