Contents insurance query

Options
Hello everyone,

Just wondering if anyone can recommend me any good contents insurance companies? We are second time renters in the South but I think we were a bit had last year as we had to pay for landlords goods too which I don't believe it the norm.

Young couple so not too many possessions, things of value - 1 desktop, 2 ipads, 2 TV's, jewellery (my watch is covered on my home insurance at my parents house). Also one £400 bike which was a separate section last year.

Anyone suggest from experience what sort of price we should expect? We have had a few quotes but always good to get the opinion of the actual public!

All the best.

I learnt the hard way about being under insured. You need to add up everything in the house that would need replacing if the house burnt to the ground. It soon adds up. Think of all your clothes, crockery, nick naks. Everything that's not furniture if that belongs to your LL. then get o line and do a price comparison and play wit the tools adjusting the excess to suit you.
God forbid you ever need to claim but I was burgled last year and found out I was under insured. Even though I was only claiming for a small proportion of the total covered, they only paid out a percentage as they said I only had a percentage of my belongings covered in the first place!

Also I paid £12.50 a month when under insured. Now I pay £20.

Ahh ok, thank you both. It is unfurnished but we haven't bought the furniture yet as need to measure up. Can I ask out of interest what you thought you needed and what you actually did? Best regards.

EDIT: sorry ignore that, you're the same person, apologies!!
  • I recently went with LV content's insurance and it came to £140 per year with up to £35,000 of items covered and includes cover for when the home is uninhabitable, I think the cost was higher for me as there are some really tall trees within a few metres of the house (which they asked about).

    Hi there,

See ours was more than that last year and it we have nowhere near that level of possessions, I will give them a look. Thanks a lot!

I am now with home protect, before I had £10,000 cover. Now I have £50,000 of cover. I actually worked it out to be about £35,000 but the policy came as £50k standard which is good now I own my furniture too.

Seriously add up daft things like your make up and toiletries! Clothes and costume jewellery, books, DVDs, CDs etc. if you had to replace them all you would be shocked!!

The bit I bolded.......if your watch is with you in your property are you sure your parents home insurance covers it still?

I ask because I have a watch, insured as a single item on my home insurance and I have to specifically state i want it covered for outside of my property too ie me wearing it to functions. Which obviously adds to the premium as it becomes a greater risk.

Sorry if I've misread what you meant....tis late :D

    Thank you everyone, so helpful!

Ok, going to do a detailed costings list so I can't be under insured :)

Honestly, my mum sorted the watch insurance. It's not a Rolex or anything but it is Gucci, she assures me it is but I'm not sure how! She used to work in insurance so I sort of trusted her hehe.

My really expensive jewellery is kept at home locked up for insurance reasons so luckily don't have to worry about that :)

Will get on the list! X
