Barclaycard - retentions £50 credit.

I just tried to cancel my zero balance Barclaycard, all going well, had to listen to the retentions blurb and kept saying I wasn't interested.

Up to the point where they instantly credited my card with £50.
Which I can transfer out immediately.
And there's no tie in period afterwards.

Interesting times that they can give away free money in the vain hope that I will spend spend spend on it.

I'd like to try this but since I always repaid in full I'm not sure this approach will work.

Don't say it wont work, give it a try.
Don't forget just because they don't earn interest from you doesn't mean that they don't earn transaction fees on what you do spend which might be worth their while giving you £50.
Worst thing that happens is they say no.

intially they offered £20, then after a couple of minutes they upped it to £50.
I thought about asking for £100 but the tone in his voice changed at £50 and at that point he started to try to hang up on me.

Hope they still do it in sept as my 0% deal runs out then and i will pay my card or transfer to another provider. The £50 would cover any BT fees incurred.
    Worth a try

Interesting. My Barclaycard will have a zero balance on Friday (been paying it off at 0% for the past 16 months)

Did they actually credit you, Andy? I would be tempted to try this, but then I might end up with no card and no bribe :o

I presume the card has to be at a zero balance before they will entertain putting you through to retentions and offering this deal ?

    Thanks

Well.... if you didn't have a zero balance, you couldn't really close your account... So effectively you're retained anyway!
