Buying and selling solicitor confusion

We have had an offer accepted on a house. We have also accepted an offer on our house. We own our property. We are applying for a small mortage with hsbc on their no fee 2.99% 5 year fix. We cannot get an appointment till next wednesday. The estate agent acting on behalf of the house we are buying is now phoning us every day saying we need to get the ball rolling. They say we need a solicitor asap for the sale of our house. I thought this would all be done by hsbc. We havnt even met with hsbc yet so i thought there was nothing we could do. I dont want to be paying money to middlemen for nothing. Do i need to get a solicitor for the sale of my old house??? Or do i wait on hsbc as there is no solicitor fees. Sorry for the long windedness.

You need to sort out your own solicitor for your sale, HSBC won't do it for you. However I'm not sure whether I would actually do this if my mortgage hadn't even been agreed yet.

As Beanie says, you need a solicitor especially as you're not familiar with the buying/selling process. Just tell the Agent what you are doing (inc your meeting with HSBC) so that they know you're not just sitting around waiting for things to magically happen!
The EA is only doing the job their client is paying them for.Mornië utulië0 -
Having bought with an HSBC mortgage recently, they will want you to use a solicitor from their "approved panel". If you use one that isn't approved, they will charge an additional fee so I would suggest that you do not chose one yourself. You can call HSBC and get them to give you the details of one in your area.
Just out of curiosity, is there a reason you aren't doing the initial application over the phone? You could get the bulk of the process done today, rather than waiting for an appointment in person. I didn't see anyone face to face until I had to give proof of identity and income.0 -
