canon poweshot or panasonic lumix

hi there,

I would be great if someone could please help me decide on a suitable camera .. I don't want anything complicated but simple enough to take pictures and HD videos.

I have shortlisted a few but not sure between the canon powershot sx260 HS £149 or the panasonic lumix TZ 27 or TZ 25 approx £140-160

I have been told that the Leica lens on panasonic are the best.

I have the previous model of Canon, its been a great camera, takes very good photos, manual settings are good to have, quick to charge and keeps its charge for several weeks. Its been dropped a few times, carried daily and is still in good working order three years on. I'd happily buy another.

Have had two previous Powershot models and have stuck with them as the build quality, reliability and photos themselves, while not DSLR quality, have all been great.

I've never used a Panasonic so can't comment on that one.

I've always had Lumix which I swear by but can't comment on the Canon. I suspect all the answers will be in a similar vein. I would guess that it comes down to personal preference as it's likely that both cameras will be similarly capable in the real world.

I had a similar dilemna just after Christmas, although I think I was looking at the Canon Powershot SX240.

I ended up going for the TZ27 as it had more features I was looking for (and I didn't need GPS), and versus the Canon I was looking at the TZ27 did full 1080p video with stereo audio (Canon only had 1080i and mono audio) but the Canon Powershot 260 HS now matches that.

I'm very impressed with the Panasonic Lumix TZ27 and would highly recommend it, but like the others I've not tried the Canon either. When the specs are this close a lot comes down to personal preference.

I can't comment on the Canon you are looking at. I had an Ixus 95 and whilst it took decent enough photographs, I found that my hubby's Panasonic fs14 which was much cheaper, took better photographs. I ended up buying a Panasonic TZ30 and have been very happy with it.

my main use of camera is to take baby photos (without flash) and videos .. it will be used mostly by my wife .. so not sure which one to buy :-( even after the above comments ..

also is currys customer service ok? if I buy and for some reason have to get a replacement camera due to fault or something are they good? I usually buy from Amazon but not this time ..

I bought an SX240 in preference to the Panasonic equivalent, as a 'walk around' camera about a year ago. I'm not usually a fan of small sensor digitals but I must say the Canon is the best pocketable camera I've used. The SX260 won't be worse, I'm sure, so should represent an excellent buy.
