Help or advice needed for a non bank savvy person please!

I don't really understand the technical terminology of banking and savings so I'm stuck as to what to do with my money.
I currently bank with Santander and have a standard account (I think it's called a current account?) and a savings account (eSaver) I got the savings account last year and so this year the interest rate plummeted. I know I should be looking for something else or somewhere else to transfer it but I don't really know what is best for me. I am currently unemployed and seeking JSA as of about a month ago but as this isn't very much I'm having to keep myself above my overdraft by dipping into the savings quite often.
I currently live with my dad but he is moving away at the start of next year so I'm worried about what money I'll have set aside when I come to move out for the first time, as I've no idea really how much you need to live comfortably and fend for yourself.
Any help would be great, I'm planning on going into a Santander branch in a few days to ask for advice but it would be nice to have some non biased advice first.
Thanks. _pale_

Firstly, never ask any Bank or Building Society what you should be doing with your money. As you already alluded, they will not give you unbiased advice.

There is plenty of information on here (main site and forum) about what the best accounts are to keep your money in. Plus how you can manage your finances.

You could start by completing a Statement Of Affairs to document (for your own good) what your outgoings are/will be.
