I am doing a course with LEARN DIRECT from home. I have the student version of MICROSOFT OFFICE, but it does not include "ACCESS". Does anyone know of a good alternative, simular to microsoft, just for the purpose of learning?
I know I could do the course at LEARN DIRECT but becuase of poor health I do the course at home and just pop into L D every so often.
THANKS.

LINDA

There is an MS Office alternative called STAR Office. I did have it before I got my copy of MS office, and it worked pretty well. I remember it was open source (that's copyright free in case your wondering), but as I now have MS office, I have no idea what's happened to it. It includes a database setup á la MS. Try a google.

Star office changed licensing after version 5 I beleive and now you have to pay a small fee for it.

Ability Office I believe also includes an Access compatible database - see http://www.ability.com/support/impexp98.php?ln=uk for import/export compatability. Just the database module is £19.99
  • You could always use a proper database, such as MySQL or PostgreSQL:

    http://www.mysql.com
    http://www.postgresql.org

Both of these are open-source and therefore freely available.

    Hi,

As well as Star Office, there's another free office suite called OpenOffice.org. There's a new version 2.0 that you can download from their site https://www.openoffice.org which is very similar in style to MS Office. They also have support forums at https://www.oooforums.org if you need any help.

    Cheers.

There is also EasyOffice, which is freeware. It's an 'MS Office' clone, which has a database called Easydatabase.
