The card is an HSBC VISA. I just rang them again and spoke to a lady who confirmed that my card has not been cancelled and would I like to cancel it - well, of course (I'm slapping my head for not doing it yesterday)! She also told me that the purchase was not made using CHIP & PIN but using 'payment verification not performed'. I don't know what that means. She couldn't give me more information than that. Also, I would have to pay up the £465 or incur interest - which I said there is no way I can pay that amount of money for a transaction that is not mine. She said that she would put this in her notes.

Okay, so my card is cancelled and I have to wait for a phone call in the next 7 - 10 working days.

Hmmm. Interesting. First it was chip and PIN, then it wasn't. Sounds like they make it up as they go along unless you complain.

A year ago my Goldfish card was cancelled and replaced due to a "security breach at a UK online retailer". There have also been issues with TKMaxx and at Shell petrol stations. It sounds likely that your card details were obtained illegally, in which case you have nothing to worry about (apart from the time you have taken to resolve this, and the stress you have incurred...).

One other thing. Although all customer present transactions are supposed to be verified by PIN, this isn't in fact the case. Occasionally in Tesco I'm asked for a signature rather than a PIN. When I asked why, I was told that this was "because some people no longer sign the card". Nice to see that security is taken so seriously by the banks.

    Thanks all for the replies.

I thought it would be a little drastic to call the police before hearing back from HSBC (although having said that, I'm still wondering if I will ever hear back from them). I decided to give it the 10 days (or was it working days) maximum that they had promised me before calling them again since the payment for this transaction was not due till the end of June. You've probably guessed I haven't heard squat from them. However, I did just check my statement online and £465 has been credited to my account.

I'm satisfied with the amount of time it has taken to have the money credited but I'm disappointed with the lack of information and advice given to me. It would also be helpful to know whether someone had used my card details and where they had obtained them. Needless to say, I'm considering looking around for a new card provider.

Sometimes i think the HSBC call center is originated in India like '3'. I am not sure if this is true.
