The attached might be a useful read:

A self contained unit would have areas capable of use for living and sleeping, for food preparation, for washing and a WC
A self contained unit does not need to have its own access to be regarded as self contained

    Hi

What was the outcome of your investigation? We are looking to buy a property which I know upfront has 3 self contained units with its own kitchen but the whole property is one large detached dwelling (but the house has two front entrances).

We are having a First Direct building survey done on Monday but I fear that First Direct will decline the mortgage. If they do, does anyone know what my options are, ask the vendor to remove the kitchens? They are not letting it out but have other elderly relatives living there.
