Items to Take on Four Month Holiday

USA TRIP

My friend is travelling from Russia to USA for a 4-month working holiday. This is her her first trip abroad. I have drawn up a list of things to remember and items to take.

Can anyone add to this list please?

Things to Remember
  • USA has 110 volts so check if your electric items will work on 110V
  • You will need a new mobile phone handset and new SIM card – buy in USA
  • You can buy phone cards to make cheap calls (but do not use the card from a payphone or mobile phone)
  • Keep valuable items in inside zip pockets
  • Keep a firm grip on luggage
  • Always keep luggage zipped up
  • Keep you cash/debit/credit cards safe and away from magnetic fields – do not allow them to pass through airport x-ray equipment.
  • E-Mail copies of your passport photo page and visa page to your E-mail address and also E-Mail to friend/relatives.
  • Give itinerary to friend/relatives of your flights/places of stay etc.
  • make multiple copies of contacts (name/address/phone numbers) and keep in several places (luggage/hand luggage/on your person)
  • It can be cold in New York in September!
  • Don’t walk out alone at night
  • Try to sleep on the plane especially as your first day will be 8 hours longer!
  • Look on Air France website for your luggage allowance. You will need to check the allowance from Moscow to Paris and from Paris to New York.
  • Do not use plastic bags for anything as people can easily steal from them – or deposit items in your bags (e.g. drugs)!
  • Do not leave bags open – always keep zipped up!
  • Put a lock on your large suitcase (if possible)
  • Follow the advice on the Air France website about carrying liquids on the plane.
  • Wear as many clothes as you can as this will not count towards your weight limits.
  • Wear a jacket at all times with inside zip pockets for:
    • Cirrus Card
    • ePassporte Card
    • Money (roubles, euros, US dollars)
    • Driving Licence
    • International passport
    • National passport
    • List of contacts (name/address/phone)
    • Mobile phone (switched off when on plane)

  • Large suitcase for luggage hold on plane (with name/address on label on inside and outside in Russian and English). Airline will also put a label on for duration of flight – but you should removed this before the next flight
    • Towel
    • Flannel
    • Soap
    • Toothbrush (not electric)
    • Toothpaste
    • Pyjamas
    • Socks
    • Panties
    • Bras
    • Hat
    • Shoes
    • Shirts
    • T-Shirts
    • Pullovers
    • Waterproof jacket
    • Dresses
    • Trousers
    • Shorts
    • List of contacts (name/address/phone)

  • Small suitcase to take on plane:
    • Spare change of clothes (in case large suitcase is lost)
    • Expensive items you don’t want to get lost
    • Glasses
    • Sunglasses
    • Camera
    • List of contacts (name/address/phone)
    • Anything else that will not fit into large suitcase

    Great list Paul

if she is taking any medicine , don't forget her prescription

unfortunately your cards WILL pass through the scanners at some point - but no harm will come to them.

As far as the lock on the case is concerned make sure it is US approved (is it [STRIKE]FOC[/STRIKE] tsa approved ?)

Plenty - loads of memory for camera or set up an online photo vault

Also copies of cards left with a relative - spare card , again left with a relative in case she loses the 1st one
