Planning a Road trip - America - any pinters ???

Hi there, well, a friend and I are planning a road trip to celebrate my 50th which will be in three years time. We've decided so far that we want to hire an RV / winnibago and tour probably the west part of USA, I want the cowboy experience and she wans to do some indian reservations.

We think we'd like to do a bit of a Thelma and Louise on the trip by hiring a car as well. Thinking of going for approx 4 weeks.

Where is the best place to start with planning all of this?? Has anyone out there ever done this and are there any companies that can help or books I can read to plan??

Also I'm trying to get hold of a map so I can stick on my wall to plan where we want to go. Can anyone suggest where I could find one?

Thnaks very much y'all :)

Thelma & Louise was filmed in Utah. If you're taking that in I'd definitely recommend Monument Valley (simply stunning - you'll recognise it from so many films and adverts) and also Bryce and Zion Canyons - at both of the latter a 2 hour or half-day horse trek (beginner friendly) is a great way to see the highlights and have a great experience at the same time.

If you go to Monument Valley make sure to get a jeep trip provided by the Navaho Indians. Although you can drive the circuit yourself, it's a rough road, and only the Indians are allowed to go off-road to show you the real hidden highlights.

If it helps I'm going in September and there's limited availability on a few of the hotels/trips we'd want - but if you book 9 month in adavnce you should be fine for just about everything - if you're going to Yosemite book a year in advance to be sure, though.

Sorry, no advice, but my 31 year old son and a couple of friends are doing Route 66 as we speak, and he is loving it. They organised it all themselves and are finding the drive very relaxing. Even the mention of names such as Oklahoma City and Amarillo are making me feel very envious, and determined to do it one day!
