Hello,

I have an empty property that was being refurbished. I have had to moth ball the house till I can save up to finish the jobs.
The house is empty, gas and electricity turned off.
Since May nPower have started charging a standing charge for both gas and electricity.
Does anyone know the best supplier who doesn't charge a standing charge?
Would it be worth just getting the meters removed?

Use any provider with an NSC tariff. It's tariff-specific, not supplier-specific.
The cost of removing and then replacing the meters will far outweigh any standing charges.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Removing reconnecting the meters would cost a small fortune, as will the council tax if you leave this house empty for too long ;).
  • The standing charge that has been taken into affect is based on Ofgems new guidelines to simplify tariffs for consumers. The majority of the "big six" have this place in already but some small organisations haven't as of yet but eventually everyone will have to pay for it, hope this helps :)

According to the latest Ofgem guidelines, daily standing charges can be for any amount, and can be as little as 0.0p per day ;)

Well, if you are paying by direct debit, npower will give you £100 a year on your "direct debit anniversary", which reduces the effective standing charge. Switch to ebico as soon as you can though
