unable to uninstall AVG

I have AVG free antivirus, but would like to change to either Windows or Avast. I have tried to download each in turn, but the residentshield tells me they contain viruses.
I have tried to uninstall AVG and although it appears to have gone from the control panel, it is still popping up with messages that are a bit scary.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

As above, run the AVG Removal Tool.
2 AV's will fight one another, so if you try to install one without fully first removing another, the first will think that the new one is a virus. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Thank you both
I have clicked on the first two removal tools and the message told me that they contain a virus and have been deleted.
What am I doing wrong?0 -
are you sure these messages are coming from avg, and not an infection?

I'm not sure what to do with the web link you sent. It has the AVG advert top left. Do I click download?0 -
click download latest version 9.81MB on top right, and scan, if it will let you
and post a hijackthis log, (see speedup sticky thread)!!

Thank you
I'll let you know what happens0 -
I'm afraid it may be an infection, as every time I try to download alternative security, it says it contains a virus and has been deleted. It did the same for the malware link you sent.
Sorry for being a pest.0 -
