It means that you have received four packets back from your mail server i.e. it it apparently working OK. Do you get any error messages when you try to send from your e-mail client? Have you tried editing the message in your outbox and then trying to send again?

I also have been having probs sending emails - they were being sent from my email programs ok but not being received by the recipients - even test emails to myself weren't arriving. Today I finally got so fed up I signed up with smtp.com and problem solved !

This only came to my attention when I got a call today from a worried client wondering why I hadn't emailed him some docs as promised. After checking everything at my end and with my domain hosting company I nailed the problem as being one of homecall's origin. It's a real worry as now I'm having to chase up individual recipients to verify that email has in fact been received - not a very productive use of time.

Now, I find can ping the homecall smtp server ok, so they obviously have an internal prob. As I've had this problem a few times before with them rather than wait for these clowns to pull their finger out I today signed up with smtp.com for my outgoing mail. I know it's a pain, and we shouldn't have to do this if homecall were providing a decent service, but if like me your email is fairly critical, then $22 a year is a small price to pay for peace of mind - plus I also get verification of delivery & email tracking and my emails arrive much more quickly - often within a few secs.

Needless to say I'll be giving homecall the boot shortly - for what we're paying we shouldn't be having critical service disruption like this.

    Hope this helps,

    Simon

Me too - plus feeling embarrassed and a nuisance.

I've had 3 weeks of intermittent problems with my new domain hosting company, but was able to use my old tiscali address. That's now playing up (not exactly new!) and tonight I'm getting this from hotmail:

    Server Temporarily Unavailable

We apologize, but the server that holds your account information is temporarily unavailable. This delay is not due to a problem with your account. You may notice that other users can sign in and get their mail, but this is because their accounts are on different servers.
We are working as quickly as possible to end this delay, so please check as often as you wish to see if you can sign in. If you keep seeing this message, it means the server is still unavailable. We appreciate your patience, and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

A techie friend I spoke to this afternoon said 'wouldn't it be fun if there's a virus out there attacking servers!'.

Very interesting - I've sent several critical mails today to someone on Blueyonder (now Virgin Media); they haven't received any.

My TalkTalk is working fine - I also have a BT Internet account that I've routed into Outlook, that, too, is working (sending and receiving) fine.
I only exist in my own mind - if you can see, hear or read me, you are a product of my imagination.
