Need photo's where they belong, in picasa.

I must have done something wrong last night, because thousands of photo's in picasa have gone. Having googled "lost photo's in picasa" it seems many people do this, either accidentally or they blame picasa.
Either way, mine have gone.
They all remain in their original location, "My pictures" and I can view them all in Windows Photo Gallery.
So, could someone please tell me if I can somehow scoop them all up from either location and send them to Picasa.
I appreciate the use external hard drive, and transfer to cd, but I am not up to that without someone with me. So hopefully a simple a/b/c/ route would be ideal please, thanks.
PS, I'm wondering if I have been bugged. IDespite removing from disc, I keep getting a goldfish picture and when I clip on properties, I see this "Properties of ***** bmp: and it gives a unique ID which is lots of numbers/numerals

Picasa doesn't store the pics, it's just an indexing system. The data is held, as you've found, in the original location. So you should be able to reimport them in the same manner as you import any new pics.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Don't ask me how or why, but this 73yr old has somehow brought them all back from wherever they were. I have to say it was more trial and error not know-how that did it. So there is no way I can help anyone.
It is my intention to transfer them to my external hard drive later today and in future, slow down when working. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
If would copy them to external hard drive, and leave them on the computer as well - use the hard drive as a back up, not your one and only storage of photos.0

All the photo's have now been copied to external hard drive. They remain on the laptop as I wish to print off some. Further to that, I may do a secondary back up on a memory stick. Phew, for a non-techie it's been stressful. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
