Or just get an overseas bank account... if you're living abroad now.

I have moved my joint current account from HSBC because they offer no incentive to keep it.

In other countries HSBC have a good banking app which can also replace the Secure Key. With any luck it will be made available here soon.

Taken from HSBC Viewpoint, published April 2013:

“We know this is an important issue and that some of our customers like the added security that the SecureKey brings to online banking, but the fact that it’s something else to carry around with you makes it inconvenient to manage your banking on the move. Some suggested, during our research into mobile payments, that we could look to have a mobile app that performs the same functions, letting you log in to online banking wherever you are, with the same high level of security for your accounts.
So, we are looking into whether this might be something we can do.”

What's inconsistent is that they'll allow you to view balances/transactions using a phone app without a 'secure' key, but you have to have a 'secure' key to do the same thing on a pc (which is more secure than a phone).

No need for this key unless you're withdrawing money/ making a payment - HSBC have been told but they won't listen.

I am all for good security with internet banking on PCs. PCs particularly with windows based operating systems as opposed to Macs and Linux based systems (such as Linux Mint) are vunerable to key loggers and other trojans/viruses. Also on the previous HSBC internet banking system prior to secure key there were lots of people divulging their security log on numbers through responding to phishing emails.
The secure key system ensures good safe internet banking even if computer security has been compromised.
The secure key system is safe provided of course you have not divulged your PIN for the secure key.
Also the secure key is fine attached to a car key ring which I carry around everywhere with me.

I have to use the secure key to access my employers bank account. I've worked there for 3 years and it is fine so far. I only work two days a week, so I probably use it a lot less than it would normally be used.

If it breaks, I haven't got the trouble of getting a new one, that's up to my supervisor.

So they just lay you off while they await the new one to appear, as you can no longer access the account online. ;)

What are we to make of the above sentence if not that HSBC are not overly bothered about introducing a proper app? I think that they will lose many customers if they don't buck their ideas up. The current account market is fiercely competitive and the reality is that HSBC have fallen way behind when it comes to offering technology.
