Redundancy and JSA question

Options
Right then,on Saturday we were all given redundancy notice-effective immediately. The firm is insolvent, end of.
Tomorrow we have to see an insolvency practitioner to fill the forms to get all owed monies. In my case it is £14,000 !!!
I am assured as it comes via Government fund I will get it ok-sometime!
My questions are;Do I sign on?
Can I claim JSA?
I can manage on savings ok, and I have the chance of work from a competitor(I was approached 3months ago).all advice will be welcome.

You can sign on - you'll receive NI credits.
You can claim JSA - assuming you have appropriate contribution history (last two years), you should receive contribution-based JSA.
If you didn't have the NI contributions, you might be eligible for income-based JSA.

anamenottaken-thankyou for your reply. You have confirmed what I have managed to find out. Most kind of you to take the trouble.

This is the first time I have ever been unemployed in 31 years. Scary stuff and soooo many questions!

I am * told* that any JSA I am paid could be repayable when my redundancy finally comes through- is this true or just an Urban Myth?

I am going to sort an appointment with jobcentre asap, it will be good to know the lay of the land in advance!

Sorry to hear your news. It really hits you for six the first time it happens.

If you have contribuition-based JSA there won't be any clawback. Don't know about income-based - but as it depends on you having no savings, I'd have thought it likely.

Marlot, I have just come through redundancy and had signed on as unemployed for 5 weeks, then I secured another job; I don't think there is a difference - contributions based JSA has been deducted from my PILON claim..as well as any income I've earned during my notice period...
Mumf good luck, I hope you get sorted quickly..

Thanks Toofy. This AM I saw the insolvency practitioner. He told me what you have already. I have seen a contact today, and I will find out in a week what he can offer me. I will keep firing off applications, and I will delay claiming JSA 'til next week.

Fortunately, now the mortgage is paid I have options to work part time. This will give me more flexibility. I would sooner earn £150 for three days than s*d all!

If you earn money it comes of the payments from the NI fund forthe weeks they cover.

if you don't earn they asume you got JSA and take that off anyway.(even if you don't claim it)

I was mistaken. I'd forgotten that because you're asking the Government to stump up the redundancy money, it gets deducted. That's rough.

It is rough. Had my boss been solvent, I would have walked away with that 12 weeks .Guess that is the price you pay for being long serving and loyal. Never again!
