Buildings Ins Claim problems

Options
We are currently claiming on our Buildings Insurance for water damage. A heating pipe beneath the floor had been leaking for number of months and as a consequence the water has soaked up the walls in two or three rooms, damaging the woodwork and plaster. The insurance company will only pay to replaster the walls from ground level to approx 2 feet up. This will leave a clear differences in finishes. In our minds this is a 'bodge'. We think we have the right to have smooth walls, as was the case before the problem occured.

What options are open to us?

This is our first claim in ten years of homeowning and are so far very dissapointed. We are already out of pocket before work has even begun!Don't even get me started on how much we've been offered to replace the carpets!! Pathetic! Ggrrrr...

Any advice greatly appreciated!!

    How do you know?

If done professionally, any decent plasterer will leave a completely smooth finish and you shouldn't be able to see the join.

I'd let them do what they suggest and then complain if the finish is not perfect. There seems little point in replacing anything that is undamaged/unaffected and from an insurance point of view, you aren't entitled to insist on this. The insurer should put you back in the position you were in, before the damage. If this can be achieved by hacking off the damaged plaster and then "making good" to match the remainder, then the job's done :D
