    If it is something you want to get into then be prepared to do a lot of reading and research, and that is before you even step into the market.

    And then there is all the reading and research into the actual stocks, and you're still not guaranteed to actually find anything worth investing in, and you could be no good at it.

    It is really only something you should do if you enjoy it because its very time consuming. I would first make sure you have a cash buffer in a savings account, especially as you're self employed.

    Then think about some investment trusts or tracker funds depending on what kind of investing style you prefer.

    I can only speak from my experience; stock markets can trick even the pros into making losses. If you are bent towards making investments, I suggest look for long-term avenues that allow you to easily liquidate your investment, like precious metals.

    Appalling advice to a newbie.

    And I say this as a gold investor who would not touch gold at these levels.
