Stupid pea question

a couple of my pea plants have come on strong and look lovely and we now have about 8 peapods right now. My eldest son is excited as he wants to eat the first peas that we get off the plants!

Now, my stupid question is: How do you know when they are ready to be picked? We have waited until the pod has fattened out, but are still not sure if it is ready?

if they've fattened out they should be fine, remember the smaller they are the sweeter they are

We always gave them a shake before picking. The smaller the peas inside the pod the more it 'rattles' as the peas get bigger and fill the pod more there is less of a noise when they are shaken. Hope this makes sense.

Thanks for asking this question... we have around 5/6 pods at the mo and was wondering when i can eat them...lol

Now.... does anyone know how you know when broad beans are ready???

I noticed that if I look at a pod (still attached) with the sun behind it I can see into it with all the peas silhouetted!
