    It's a Minimum Load problem.

I've found the simplest answer to be to just leave a few halogens in place. I replaced 12 50W halogens in the kitchen (!!!£££££s worth of electric. What idiot installed those?) with 9 4W LEDs and 3 20W halogens

My issue is that every spotlight fitting has a separate transformer, so I'd have to go and rewire in the attic.
    Maybe one day...

  • i've tried many (few dozens) of led mr 16, not one is as bright as 40w halogen, the brightest one i got is 3x3w leds (got from lightingnext), seller said it is as bright as 40w lamp, well b.s. close to 30w halogen.
also don't calculate output by lm\w, leds in those bulbs are not driven to full potential, they have to build a lamp that might be used in fixtures that are sealed, so no airflow=heat issues, that is why they are not near 90lm\w or so , whatever datasheet for led says.
don't expect any single mr16 be as bright as single 40w halogen, few of them may be.

It's not lm per W you want to look at, that just tells you the light output, for the electric input. LEDs are very efficient of course, and this makes them look good compared to normal filament, halogen and even CFL bulbs.
You want to look just at lm. I would say that you want at least 400lm to replace a 50. It would definitely be enough to replace a 40w halogen.
As you can see, the quality ones won't be found in pound shops!
