If all you're going to be doing on it is photo editing, and can manage to learn the ways, maybe stick a version of linux on it instead of vista (assuming that a) you can find appropriate drivers if it's an old laptop and b) that the photo editing software will run on linux, or have a version you can use/if it's free stuff you use, look for a linux capable one).

But get rid of all gumpf from it whatever you do, so as suggested, wipe it/format it/restore it and start from scratch with it.
