Budapest - Advice for a weekend stay

Weekend trip to Budapest in middle of May - Never been there before, does anyone have any advice of what to see, where to stay, do they take euros? getting from the airport: bus or taxi. What not to do!

Get the airport bus (will take you to your hotel and pick you up when your time to leave comes). Also, buy a 72 hour Budapest Card - it will allow you free travel on all the trams, underground, buses, etc. You can get to everywhere and see everything using public transport in Budapest. You don't wait long, either - buses, trams, etc, come along with great frequency. You'll also get a guide on everything to see in Budapest and how to get there when you buy your Budapest Card (you can buy them at the airport, too).
Change currency at the airport in Budapest rather than changing it over here - you get a much better exchange rate (354 or so forins to the pound as opposed to 312-320 you get over here). Hungary uses Forins, not Euros.
Do a search on here for what to see, as there was a Budapest thread not so long ago.In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?
It's time to make that change.

*Have Coffee & Cakes at Gerbeud (Was prepared to spluge, but shocked to see how cheap it was):D
*Go to dinner at Gundel (worth very penny)
*Visit the parliament building (free if you flash an EU passport!)
*Visit a Thermal bath - Kiraly Baths & pedicure if you're all girlies together & Széchenyi (really beautiful) if you're mixed
*Go to the opera - we were in a box for Don Giovanni for about £6
*Walk off the excesses at Margit Island & enjoy the dancing fountains
*We stayed at the Art Otel & really enjoyed it
Hope you have fun

A word of warning though...gizmo wrote:Lastly I highly recommend the Cake Buffet at the Marriott Hotel - they have it in the lobby at all times of the day. You pay something like £5 per person and eat as much cake as you like - the choice was impressive - and most people just go there for desert after dinner. And if you are MSE Experts then you will do what we did and just pay for 1 buffet and both eat off the same plate. I mean how much cake can 1 person eat after all. So much cake to choose from - not much space to put it...if you know what I mean..
We tried this when we went this year as we'd missed out last year & it was manky. Cakes were stale & dried & left out on display until some poor soul ate it. *shudder* If you want cake, go to Gerbeud"This is a forum - not a support group. I'd second LondonDiva's suggestion of coffee & cakes@ Gerbeud & eating at Gundel.
Gundel also does a sunday brunch @ 5000 Florins.
Also visit the Central market & make sure you visit a baths - if sunny I think Széchenyi is best.
Hotels - you can priceline the Marriott for about £140 for 3 nights - great location & found everyone there really nice and friendly.A shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist.

Budapest was lovely.
I just wished that both tournaments were not a minimum of an hour out of town, which meant up at 8am and back after 10pm!!! It was very hot both days and with my fair skin came the sunburn!!
The free time we had, Friday afternoon and Monday morning, were spent walking around, enjoying a beer or two and visiting the thermal baths.

I intend to go back, and discover the city properly.
