Best route - Essex to Skye

Will be driving from Colchester (north Essex) to Portree on Skye in a couple of weeks. We've been to the Lake District many times and various parts of Scotland, and I still can't decide what the best route is. Cambridge to Carlisle - A14 to Birmingham, M6 up? Or A1 up, A66 from Scotch Corner, then M6? The M6 around…

All I have to say is I'm incredibly jealous - enjoy! Excellent weather for it.

I've got so many pictures of my old MG ZS up there, the best trip of my life.
We went from Preston to Inverness, stayed over, then on to John O Groates, then back down to Skye and finally back to Preston.

All in a weekend - that was a lot of fuel
