My space bar has become very dodgy.

When typing at any decent speed it no longer works & I have to go back and carefully re-insert spaces between the words.

In fact looking at it now, it appearstobe at a slope. The right hand end (which is the side that gets used most as I'm right-handed) appears to be lower, pretty much in the depressed position.

Can I fix it? How?

Can it be fixed? By who?

(it's a Sony - about 3.5 years old)

My suggestion is a company called lapcure,

but before I am accused of advertising get 3 or more quotes ....

there are lots of internet companies , or just look local.

lastly have a look on ebay for the same laptop for spares or repairs / replacement keyboards if you fancy some diy ....

replacing a keyboard is normally quite easy

Best thing would be to replace the keyboard, I've done it before was pretty easy cost about £20.
  • Hi,

before you go to any expense try a bit of diy.

Prise the space bar off and clean under, check for damage, the contacts are easily replaced.

Here's a wee video to help, you can skip the ad.

You call that a 'wee video!' It's dragged out and highly irritating!

However, thanks! It does impart 2 useful bits of info: how to remove & how to replace the keys. If it was 20 secondslong insteadof 5 minutes it would be fine!

Unless you use it whilst travelling, just purchase a wired or wireless keyboard

I hardly type on my lappy as prefer my wireless keyboard.

sorry about the 'wee video', I didn't actually watch it all, just googled to find one, to let you see how easy it was to fix it yourself, before spending any money, suppose you could've searched yourself and found a 'wee video' in less than the 5 minutes wasted.

Anyway, hope you got it sorted.

While replacing a keyboard is normally easy, if this is a Sony Vaio, it's probably going to be somewhat harder, likely needing the removal of 58 identical looking but subtly different screws and probably having to disassemble the entire laptop to get to one screw that is on the bottom of the keyboard.

(I exaggerate, but Vaios are a pain to work on)

Worth removing the space bar first and re-seating it to see if that helps. The metal bar should slide into two loops on the keyboard, and then it's a case of pushing it down into place.

The clip assembly may be damaged, in which case you can buy a replacement for a couple of quid on ebay.

Worst case scenario you need a replacement keyboard. Shouldn't be too much for a second user one from ebay again.

    Sadly, yes- it is!

Have removed the space bar. Inthe middle is a button that seems towork. On either end are littly (almost) round plastic widgets. The oneon the right (actually two widgets one on topof theother) is loose - can't seem to get them back in place.

    Hi,

sounds like a broken scissor switch,

    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcREc4Zn6c5JZlv2D22DpFdBC-Lmnr9SauII1K2fPj3W9Uvu6Q7Rmw,

now here's another 'wee video ' showing the workings and how to replace, it runs for 4 minutes 42 seconds, (you might get an ad but you can skip that) so you might want to wait until the weekend before you watch it, ;)

If that is the problem, now that you can wrestle a key cap off, you could use the parts from under a never used key, money saving, eh? :D.

    Good luck.
