Does NFC payment work in UK, is there an App for it?

Hi Guys,

I've just got an LG L5 and it comes with NFC, but I cant see in the settings how to enable this to do contactless payment.

Does this feature depend on the type of phone,Credit card you use, do you need a special app?

I cant see anything in the play store that would do it so not sure, if I've dreamt this?

Thanks]

I don't believe there are any agreements and providers signed up for it through handsets in the UK right now, only 'pay-by-bonk' bank cards
  • This is about as close as you can get to a mobile contactless payment in the UK at the moment:

However, there are a great number of other things you can do with NFC that are not payment related:

Btw, if anyone wants to play with a mifare NFC sticker (most nfc devices except S4), I have some. You can Persian them with info using free apps, so I have...
one on the back of my laptop with my full business card, people can scan it into their phones instead of paper/qr code
One on my monitor which sets the phone volume to moderate, sets tethering on, Wi-Fi off, etc.,
One on my door to set phoned loud, tethering off, bluetooth on
One by the bed to put phone on silent, Wi-Fi on, start a music player app.

PM if you want one to experiment with :)
  • Yes NFC payment works in UK. I have used it only in Mark and spencers but you can use it any shop displying the NFC ripple symbol. As far as I know, only Orange network allows NFC payment using phone. For this you will have to get a NFC Sim from Orange (One with ripple symbol). You will have to download 2 apps for this to work an orange app and a barclays NFC payment app.
    Good luck. :)
