It is a political choice, but all the time we are paying less of our GDP through taxation than other nations it is not unaffordable even if we choose to destroy the NHS for political motives.

I can't work out how to do that colour coding thing, but to answer point 1 - the reason why most people would not wish the NHS to downsize etc is because they have no alternative system of healthcare

point 2 - most people give very little thought to how the NHS is financed, they simply expect it to be available

point 3 - as McDonalds grew larger, so did the profits

point 3.5 - the idea that some healthcare is not affordable within the NHS would not have occurred to the founders of the NHS

A lot also realise they get reasonable value for money and wouldn't necessarily get anything better from an alternative system for most people.

point 2 - most people give very little thought to how the NHS is financed, they simply expect it to be available

True for some but a lot are aware it has to be paid for somehow and that is through "taxation". The same could be set of the police, fire service , teachers etc.

point 3 - as McDonalds grew larger, so did the profits

Because consumers are stupid gullible people. Money for old rope like lots of brands.

They didn't expect care to be limitless but I accept they could not foresee the way health care has expanded and improved the chances of many over the years.

The NHS is a great idea in theory. Just visiting any hospital and seeing the amount of waste and inefficiency is heartbreaking though.

    What sort of things?

No different to many large organisations.

The fact remains that the NHS is hanging on by the skin of its teeth.

It needs either more money, or a scaled-down standard of service (or massive economies, as per ILW)

But, so far, no politician can say so...

    It needs all three.

It would be a start if they didn't waste billions each time a party got in power shuffling the deckchairs.

Do list some examples rather than generalisations. Its very easy to knock the NHS.

The NHS is also a great idea in practice.

I can give you an example of something that is wasteful to both us as patients who pay and us as taxpayers funding the hospitals .

Car parking charges ...The usual ones not the odd exception.
where a contract is signed paying a large figure but still a fraction of the money being taken ....It is nonsense.

I am sure plenty of people would have preferred it to either be run by the hospital or through a third party charity that was none profit based.

I do not approve of high parking charges at hospital either but I am not sure what the example you are quoting is about.

Parking charges exist for various reasons to subsidise the costs of the hospital. If the hospital chooses to accept a guaranteed income in return for allowing a third party to make a profit based on actual usage so be it (I think this is your point?) Other organisations sell the management of its car parking facilities.

It has become apparent that car parking contracts are decidedly in favour of the private companies that run them ...I don't see any reason why a profitable sideline would be repeatedly farmed out in a way that does not maximise profit.
I don't know how you struggled to see it was the example ?
I am aware how it works and that it is not a particularly complex arrangement..a question was raised regarding waste ..I explained that not making the most of the resources you have is a waste ..simple enough ?

Perhaps they have placed car parking out to tender and they have got the best deal at a given time. they may mean foregoing additional income if it brings other benefits - investment in car parking, maintenance, resurfacing, ticket machines and money collection, banking, security, surveillance, permit issuing and control.

If they don't have the overhead and headache but simply take a"net profit" that may be a good result.

I know it is a bugbear of staff having to shell out to park. Particularly when the site is out of town and they have to work shifts when public transport is not available.
