If you have a debit card then I assume you have a decent credit rating, getting a credit card shouldn't be a problem :)

Did you apply for the FlexAccount in-branch? Usually if you are eligible for a credit card they offer you it there and then without an additional credit check. If you were offered that and declined it, you'd be more than likely to have your application approved :D

    Hi Kilty,
I opened the account on line, they offered me one on line with the application, however at the time I didn`t want one, but now going to USA I would like one for emergencies, my credit rating on experian is 999.
I just wouldn`t want to get turned down

They'll more than likely accept you - it's the debit card they're so strict with.

Sounds like your credit rating is damn good so there won't be a problem :D

Does anybody know what the monthly pay in requirements are for certain overdraft limits?

I've generally found that it's about 115% of your monthly pay-in, but they need to see about three months of the credit being regularly made.

I have a a small limit on my FlexAccount, although the "reserved" figure is about three times the limit. This reserved figure rises and falls about once a month, and seems to track the ups and downs of my credit.

The FlexAccount Cash Card is unlikely to be suitable for all your foreign currency needs. Internet/phone transactions are sometimes denominated in euros, dollars, etc. Based on forum posts, I’ve compiled the following list of options for FlexAccount Cash Card holders, going from the easiest to the hardest with respect to credit scoring.

    1. Post Office Classic Card.
    2. Nationwide Credit Card.
    3. Apply for new FlexAccount (debit card).
    4. Upgrade existing account for debit card.

This is runs in precisely the opposite direction to logic, and is based on anecdotal evidence from this forum. I would welcome comments on whether you agree.

The Post Office card doesn’t require a job, but you do need £8000 gross income. Nationwide don’t state any income (except £25 000 for the Gold card), but their employment requirements are thought to be onerous. There’s no information on the ease of the Nationwide Classic versus Comic Relief Card, but the latter is likely to be less profitable so harder to get.

The Post Office issues Mastercard. Nationwide issues Visa. The card industry claims the two systems are equally well accepted abroad, but I’m not sure if that’s true. Sponsorship deals (e.g. sporting competitions) can ensure that only one is accepted. In general credit cards are better for spending than debit cards. The only exception would be where a surcharge is levied for credit cards. Unlike in the UK, I’ve always thought foreign merchants were unable to distinguish the two types of Visa cards. If people could post about relevant experiences it would be useful. The only time I’ve seen it is for Ryanair flights originating outside the UK (sometimes buying two one-way flights is cheaper than a return). But they also have a surcharge (smaller) for debit cards unless it’s Electron. With the possibility of Paypal credit card surcharges, it could become an issue for the cheapest way to send money abroad.

I have had a basic Nationwide account since 2003, my wages are paid in each month but I wasn't offered a debit card at the time.

I applied on line for a new account in 2005 and was told I could only have a cash card account, the same as I currently have. So I went into the branch and aksed about upgrading to a debit card, I was told that you can't upgrade you have to apply for a completely new account?

I'm confused as some of the posts on here talk about upgrading, is this a new thing they do?

I want a debit card but if Nationwide are being funny with customers I may consider taking my business elsewhere. I do have bad credit history, but for the last 18 months there have been no debts at all against me, what bank accounts would anyone recommend?
