Question re buckets and drainage

I've been Money Tipped!
I have bought some builders buckets from Wilkinsons to put some plants in on the patio (99p 15ltr buckets).

I am going to drill some holes in and fill the bottom with a shallow layer of gravel.

Is it best to drill holes in the bottom of the bucket or around the sides, about an inch up?

    Its a good idea to put the holes in the side if you are not standing them on pot feet. So sides would be good.

    I thought so, thanks for that.

    I have just had to go to Argos to buy a new drill just for this as the old one had broken, I tried using a screwdriver last night, nightmare, no use whatsoever on builders buckets.

    :D Well hopefully you will be able to use the drill for other things.

    I can imagine the trouble you had with a screwdriver. :o;) If it was me there would have been tears. :D

    To be honest I only tried it for a couple of minutes whilst going on about how much easier it would be if we had a new drill etc etc.

    Result!

    A new drill was purchaaased this morning. :D

    Six builders buckets drilled within a few minutes.

    If anyone is looking for a basic cordless electric drill / screwdriver just to use for their patio planters, buckets etc Argos do a value one for £12.98 (it says £14.99 in the catolgue but it has been reduced).

    You will have to buy a drill bit if you are going to use it for your buckets as it only comes with a screwdriver bit (phillips/flathead).

    You can use a soldering iron or a skewer or screwdriver heated over a gas flame to make the holes, also Morrisons sell the empty flower buckets which work out cheaper than builders buckets.

    Yep! I have tons of Morrisons buckets, ideal for tomato plants but builders buckets are ideal for larger plants and small trees.

    I have also used skewers in the past but now we have a ceramic electric cooker so not so good for heating skewers etc, but great idea for those with gas cookers or electric with the ring hobs.
