Minecraft/Java Problem....?

I am running 32bit Windows XP and have been attempting to run the Minecraft demo prior to purchasing this for my son. However, major disappointment tonight as three hours later, we have been unable to crack this, the demo just will not work.

Further to copious amounts of research I have installed, uninstalled and now reinstalled Java 7 but although the installation appears to work OK, when I come to verify the installation, I just get a white box with a small red cross at top left corner, no text confirming or denying verification.

Am I missing something obvious here? The Minecraft download requirements include JRE v6 or above, so in Java terms, I thought I was doing right, so any help would be so much appreciated. My son is so disappointed that we couldn't crack this, and I am left mega frustrated for me and sad for him.

Thanks for any help, Tabs x

Have you tried completely uninstalling Java?

Here's what worked for me when this last happened:

    1) Uninstall Java entirely. You can do this via Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

    2) Go to Java's website and download the JRE that just barely meets the requirements of what you're trying to accomplish, but, be sure to get the version that is associated with your Operating System. There are many versions of Java you can get, so be sure to get the one that works for Windows XP 32-Bit.

    3) Restart your PC.

    4) Go to Control Panel and open Java. Have a look around, and see if there's anything that looks unreasonable or questionable. Google what you don't understand.

    5) Once that's done, retry the demo. If it doesn't work, try it in another browser.

Let me know how it goes!

Hi, thanks so much for your response.

Well, I have tried to remove Java via Control Panel etc but it doesn't seem to be working. When I click on Remove, it asks that I close all browsers (although none were open) so I clicked
OK anyway. It then appears to be working on the Removal of the programme but then after AGES it was still just hanging with an egg timer and I'm thinking this can't be taking this long, surely. So, I tried Ctrl, Alt and Delete and it tells me that the programme is not responding. It seems like it will just not let me remove the programme. Help! I feel like I am being taken over by flippin Java! Any ideas why it won't seemingly uninstall?

Also, if I do try and access Minecraft via another browser (I'm on IE at the moment) do I simply download Mozilla, for instance, and would I then change my default browser over and try the demo via Mozilla (that's assuming that I can ever get rid of and reinstall the right Java I guess....!).

    Cheers for now, Tabs x

If you can't uninstall a programme the normal way, download this --> http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/MSI-cleanup-utility-3889c8db
you run the MSICUU2.exe file to install the clean up utility, then run it and it gives you a list of all installed applications it can remove; find the one you want, click 'ok' (or whichever button it is) and it wipes it out in seconds.

The MSI cleanup utility was discontinued because "it sometimes damaged other components that were installed on the computer."

As recommended above, there are applications and ways to remove programs that refuse to uninstall.

As for the browser, you do not need to change the default browser. You simply need to open it and go to the demo, sign in with your Mojang account, and it will go through the Java prompts where you need to allow it to run. The idea that it's an IE problem is possible, but not definite until everything else has been checked.

    sometimes.. but very rarely.
We use it pretty often at work and never had any issues.

Better to use one that isn't known to break programs over one that is. :)
