Isle of Man student no student loan...

Hi, I'm posting this on behalf of my sister, she has been living with my mum in the Isle of Man for the past 5/6 years, and with the island not having a uni the government pay for your uni fees. This is all well and good but it means she doesn't get any accommodation or maintenance loans. And with being a student is finding it difficult to get a job. So my mum is paying her rent and living fees! This is a huge strain as having to run her own house with two other kids still at home- both younger. She's not eligible for the grant the island offers, as my mum apparently earns too much. Has anyone got any experience or suggestions? I'm worried for my mum financially!
Thanks in advance!

So the IOM don't offer any loans? That seems very miserly, and must surely mean that a lot of people from the island are completely unable to go to university. Perhaps you should be lobbying your representatives to increase taxes on all those exiles from the mainland so that they can afford to get their young people educated.
Sorry, I don't have any useful suggestions for you, other than for your sister to relocate to the mainland, defer going to university in order to live and work here long enough to both save some money and qualify as a resident, then go to university.0 -
Yea don't do loans just grants for the people who don't earn as much. But feels like the middle class has a rough deal as their expected to fund their child through uni as well as pay their own bills! Seems crazy and I think I would rather have a loan for the whole lot.0

if you live in a low tax country then you cannot expect it to have the funds to cover grants or loans can you? If your mother is above the means test level then as far as the IOM is concerned, she voted for the system that now means she is expected to pay for her kids herself0
