New Extension, Electricial work

When getting the building control certificate for a new extension and in particular regarding the electrical work - does the work in the extension only or the whole house need to be checked and certified?

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
It should just be the new installation work that will be checked and signed off, if they have run the cables back to the fuse board.

If they have merely added onto existing circuits then the relevant circuits will need testing as well.

  • thank you. I wasnt sure as one electrician said everything needed to be checked and it would cost £200

BOTH of these situations are correct: Whilst only NEW circuits need to comply, or extensions to existing ones, there are certain fundamentals which also need to be checked as well, and these can equally apply to your whole property.

For example - if you don't at the moment have an RCD fitted, then in order to do the new work then you'll need to have one fitted. If you have any other 'hidden' faults elsewhere then having an RCD fitted will show them up.....so prudence says that you inspect the existing to know what you're up against.

The things that need to be checked for are earth bonding, earthing in general, insulation resistance and polarity on relevant existing circuits.

I would have far more confidence in an electrician who insists on doing things properly than someone prepared to quote and rush in.
