It may be different now, but the DWP can sometimes help with the cost of interview clothing, they did when I had an interview a few years back.

Would your son qualify for DLA?

your son could get housing benefit, but not while he lives with you as you work, he could move into a flat share and claim. This would give you the chance to get a smaller/cheaper flat.

Or he could go to Uni and live in the halls and get a student loan.

My rent is over half my salary as private renting in West Oxforshire is very high, and the council have told me over and over again in the last 8 years that single white working females do no get priority housing, if i was an immigrant, or living on benefits I'd have been housed long since, but being English and working I get not enough points apparently. I was told i do my self no favours by working.

I cannot let you type this for other people to read without challenging it. If you can produce any proof of an employed council official saying this to you I will help you take appropriate action. I suggest you ask your local council housing department to share their housing allocation policy with you, and if you feel it is not being applied fairly then contact your local Councillor. If you cannot produce any proof then please stop making such awful generalised blame the immigrants and bash those on benefits statements.

Wasn't something like only 8% of housing given out was to immigrants, sure I read that stat somewhere.
Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked

Some excellent facts can be found here

(apologies if I am not allowed to post links like this)

but some people would rather ignore facts and stick to opinions which contradict the evidence.

I feel sorry for the OP with some of the horrible advice people have given. Kick him out? Geez. There's guiding people then there's being straight up harsh. She's clearly going through a hard time and her son is obviously not on the X-Box all day every day seeing as he is constantly applying for work (and the subscription is hardly £50 a month) and is getting interviews but not having any luck with them. So how about you cut out the patronising comments? Fair enough if he was lazy and expected people to give him hand outs but it's obviously not the case.

Also - You don't just develop social skills. They are learnt at a very young age. You can learn to develop some over time but it's much harder when you're older.

His CV and qualifications sound fine, the next step would be to continue applying for jobs and to seek advice on voluntary work. Opportunities could crop up at any time.

Good luck and ignore the holier-than-thou attitude of some of the members here.

OP - are there no apprenticeships in the area? Yes, he may have to travel some, but unfortunately the old 'job next door' is a very rare beast these days. However, you can't do this for him, he's an adult man. Take his benefit money for rent, give him a tenner for spending money and let him sort his financial problems himself. If your housing is too expensive, move, or find other ways of upping your income/decreasing your expenditure.

The benefit system should be for emergencies, not for 'I don't have much money, the government should give me some'. You are working so you are doing the right thing, but you and your family appear to be living beyond your means. That is not the government's problem, it is yours and your childrens'.
