I don't think it's confidential once you've been found guilty. If it was illegal to discuss it then you'd never see people in the papers for having stolen something.

Gross misconduct on your file is certainly going to scupper any chances of getting another job. He can legally shout it from the rooftops since you have been found guilty of it.

Talking to those about it within their company is going to be the very least of your problems when it comes to applying for another job. Previous employers and references go hand in hand at any interview. That's without the thought of how it will effect you when claiming benefits.

The OP hasn't been found guilty of theft in a court of law.

What makes you think it should be confidential?

Do you mean he is talking TO the staff about it or that it has been discussed in front of staff?

How else is the manager going to explain your sudden departure without having to lie.
It will also deter any others in the store from copying your action.

Strictly , he can state 'dismissed for theft' but until and unless it is proven in a court of law or admitted by OP, he puts himself in the wrong if he states 'guilty of theft'
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

Of course they are going to discuss the theft, The op is the topic of the hot gossip and will be until the next gossip worthy headline come along.

I know I was once told that a member of staff had been sacked for gross misconduct but wasn't told what the actual offence was

that's unkind of him but I guess not illegal.

I hope you can get some work maybe through someone you know and then in the future you can get references from them.

    good luck x

You have been fired for stealing a previous job?

Or the one you are at when they fired you?
