Holiday accommodation cancelled 2 days before flying

Received a phone call today from Direct Holidays telling me me accommodation has been cancelled for my holiday on Saturday.
They've found me alternative accommodation but not even in the resort I wanted and they're only offering £40 compensation.
The resort says 'party town at night' when I booked a resort with narrow streets and medieval alleyways, picturesque squares with attractive countryside.
They tell me I can cancel the holiday if I want and they won't even charge me a cancellation fee...........how gracious!
I am now totally stressed because I'm supposed to be getting on the train tomorrow to go to my mum's as the first leg of my journey and they don't even guarantee that if I don't like the hotel or the resort I can have a move!
Apparently they're honouring their contract by finding alternative accommodation of the same star rating.
Any suggestions?

you can see if they would let you cancel and then rebo a uitable ( and hopefully cheaper) last minute holiday or use the extra compensation to upgrade. depending on whereyou are going there may be no other accomodation options or if they suggest a few do a search on trip advisor and use the comp for taxis.0

I can't find anything in the resort I want at such short notice and they say its full. The apartment they're putting me in looks quite nice just not sure about the resort.
I booked Umag in Croatia this is Porec - anyone know what its like?0 -
Direct holidays did that to us with a tenerife holiday some years ago. We were aghast that they suggested moving us from a nice quiet resort to playa de las Americas...we loved it! The accomodation was so good we've been back five times since so maybe it'll work out fine!0

It's been a few years since I have been there but Porec is nice. It has a network of narrow streets, a picturesque harbour and some good beaches.
Here's the Trip Adviser page about the resort :-

And here is the Holiday Truths page about the resort :-

Remember that Direct holidays may actually doing yourselff a favour- if they no longer use the accomodation there is likely to be a health and saety issue or disturbing building work- not everything is always done to delibratly wreck your booking!0

I'd hardly refer to Porec as a 'party town' It's a lovely place, although id you're intending spending a week there I'd hire a car for a few days. Rovinj is another nice place (close by) and you can always spend a day in Pula.0
