Both partners are earning above the legal minimum wage, should children only be a privilege that the better off among us can afford? Not for the commoners? If everybody on NMW got a better paying job the country would be in a right mess!

There's no shame in a lower paid job, the shame is on the employers and the government who keep wages so pitifully low.

Op, ignore this. You work hard and you want a baby, that's fine and normal and there's nothing wrong with accepting the help that is available to you.

Goodness, who said there was shame in a low paid job or that you have to be well off to have children. Who actually ever said anything about getting a higher paid job either? You've taken your bat and ball completely with my post.

I suggested the basis of starting a family should be done around your own income not potential benefits. Not least because said benefits could be taken away/capped etc. Then what? Someone's used them in their calculations as to how they will live with a baby. How is that right??

We can all think of ways to improve our finances. It doesn't have to be about getting a new job that pays well. Some of the hardest working people are paid pittance and I resent the suggestion that I'm saying only the better off should have children.

Supposing benefits weren't an option? If you wanted a child you would try and find a way to have one on your own two feet. You'd give up your car/sky subscription etc etc.

You speak of crap wages but having £700 a month after bills seems pretty reasonable to me....
