Dear all,

I have a very complicate situation and hope your tips, replies will give me some direction. I separated from my husband and was trying to get back on my feet, but two months ago lost my job. I am living with a friend she was nice enough to accommodate me during the break-up, however I need to move out due to her personal crises.
I applied all councils, but they suggested to register with local authorities. I tried to register with local council for some sort of housing, but was refused because I don't live in the are for 5 years. I am banging my head against the wall and don't know what to do.
Since I never paid the rent I didn't claim house benefits, only JSA.
I am 55 years and wondering if there is any assistance outhere for me in order being homeless.
All your information would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Have you looked at private rentals? If you check this site, you will be able to establish what LHA you are entitled to. You need to check the one bedroom rate.

Many local councils are asking for a local connection to the area for a specific number of years.

The basic truth is there is often just insufficient social housing available.

As Dogger says you need to look at private renting. You would be entitled to the one bed local housing allowance.

If you visit the local council offices they may be able to help you with a rent deposit scheme.

Renting whilst on benefits is not easy and some landlords will want a month's rent up front and a deposit. Some may ask for a guarantor. Have you any savings? Do you know someone who would act as a guarantor?

An alternative (and cheaper) option is to become someone's lodger. Look in the local newspapers and ask around to see if anyone wants a lodger.

    Dear Dogger69,
Thank you for your reply. I checked and it gave a number £255.00 per week. I am confused is this how much I am entitled?

Assuming that is the one bedroom rate for your area then this is the maximum that they will cover (£1105 per month)
Some landlords will not accept people on housing benefit so that will reduce your choices
What has happened with the home where you lived with your husband. If there is equity then this could affect if you can receive any housing benefit

Kensington? The chances of finding somewhere within your budget and willing to take a benefit claimant are very very low. You might be able to find a house share or studio, but then you will only be entitled to the shared rate (around £125 a week).

Is it possible to expand your search area, possibly even outside London?
