Start - Control Panel - Sounds and Audio Devices - Make sure that "Place Volume icon..." is selected. This is with XP0

On my machine, if I click on the little < button (bottom left), the speaker icon appears momentarily. If I click on it, it then remains visible. Perhaps yours is the same.0

If it's XP, right-click the Start button & select properties. Select the Task Bar tab & hit the Customize button. Search for the volume icon in there & change the behaviour setting to "Always Show".
It should then appear in your task bar & stay there. The pen is mightier than the sword, and considerably easier to write with.

Hi,
if it is hidden, you can show all icons in XP, right click taskbar, properties, and untick hide inactive icons.0 -
I've had this before, and the volume icon completely disappears. The checkbox is always checked in the control panel, and clearing, apply, ticking, applying gets it back, but then it closes again. A bug methinks, but I reinstalled Windows and it's fine now
Sorry this isn't of more help! If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.0 -

Hi, been away so not been able to check MSE!
I reinstalled Windows from scratch by making sure everything I wanted to keep was stored safely, and then putting in the Windows CD, formatting the drive, and installing everything from scratch.
There were also other things things that had gone wrong, and my PC was going a bit slow too.
HTHIf at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.0
