Credit Card Refund - Petrol

I wonder if anyone from the MSE community could help me with a problem.

Recently I visited a petrol station and filled up. A coach was parked in the adjacent bay. I paid the amount verbally (£34) stated by the attendant, I paid on my credit card via chip and pin and off I went.

When checking my petrol receipts I noticed the cost of purchase was £102. Looking back I must have input my details without fully checking the purchase amount. It turns out the £68 additional cost was that of the coach driver.

I had phone the garage, who explained they were expecting my call and they admitted fault by selecting two transactions and stated they would look into a refund, whilst at the same time obtain the money from the coach company.

After no luck, I went through Nationwide to look at a refund. I later received a letter saying they could not help because a pin number was used. I recently tried to use the Visa terms and conditions of refund stating 'Goods not received', yet I was informed because it was petrol I could get a refund under that either.

To date Nationwide, will not help me at all. The garage isn't helping either.

Has anyone else had a similar problem? Could anyone else help me get a refund on my money?

What evidence do you have that you only bought £34 of petrol? Does the till receipt show this and the card receipt show the higher amount?
  • The receipt shows the two transactions. One for Pump 1 and one for Pump 2. One for Petrol (Mine) and one for Diesel (coach).

Seeing as they have admitted their mistake - I would drive in - fill up with £68 of petrol - drive away.

Can the garage not issue you a refund directly? You should not have to wait while the chase the coach company for the £68.

I'd say that's the garages fault (although I would be inclined to say it's common sense to check the PIN pad before putting your PIN in). If it were me I'd take the receipt to the fuel station and ask for the refund there and then. Since they've admitted fault, I can't see why they shouldn't refund you. If the till clerk won't refund you, the manager should.

Another case on enter PIN and repent and blame everyone else.....

The whole point of the PIN is you authorise the amount on the screen. Hence the need to check before entering the 4 digits.

There is nothing Nationwide can do. There is no dispute right.

You need to go back to the garage and get them to refund.

You need to go back to the garage, let them refund the entire transaction and then re-debit with the correct amount.

No one else can help as you authorised the transaction and were given the amount that was going to be taken beforehand.

I've had similar with a fuel card, but that was just fill up, walk into shop, swipe card, and leave. No PIN and no signature required. Refunded within the month.
