supermarket car parks! signage

Yes. The Government should run a massively expensive public information campaign about the irrelevance of lines and arrows in a supermarket.i think motorists should be informed and told more about this
Well worth the investment of taxpayer's money.0 -
I'm kinda on the fence with this one. It really frustrates me when people don't follow the signs on a car park (especially when the lanes on the car park are only wide enough for one car), however, I also agree that whatever the circumstances, there is no excuse for not looking both ways.0

While the arrows in car parks have no specific legal basis and so disregarding them is not an offence in itself, the requirement not to drive carelessly applies in a supermarket car park just as much as it does on a road - and driving against the flow of traffic in spite of road markings to the contrary could well be classed as careless driving, especially if an accident resulted.
That said, reversing out of a parking space without having a good look in all directions is also careless driving so the OP's at fault as well. 50:50 would be my guess at how the insurance claim will go.0 -
Tilt - I did say if possible, and OP didn't even mention having a trolly. You could also carry the bags the length of your car...
Anyway, someone has already pointed out to OP that a child or dog or anything could be behind them going in any direction, so only looking one way, and only looking for cars, while reversing is pure bad driving.
The other driver wasn't LEGALLY obliged to follow the signs in the car park, but kindof got some karma for breaking the rules.0 -

That's all very well in principle but if a big van or 4x4 is parked next to you how do you manage that "good look in all directions"? Often all that you can do is to reverse out VERY slowly.0 -
I guess that the OP is not getting the tea & sympathy they expected.0

I assume all other drivers are idiots and drive accordingly. Round here I'm often right about their abilities, or lack of them.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

Well obviously in that situation all you can do is edge out with great caution, but that's not what the OP says happened. That's all very well in principle but if a big van or 4x4 is parked next to you how do you manage that "good look in all directions"? Everybody who is saying "should reverse in", how then do you get your shopping trolley near to the boot of the car?
Easy !!! scrape your trolley down through the gap between your car and the next car, works a treat every time, then leave your trolley at the back of your car as you wouldn't want to damage it
and drive off.....simples 0
