Help! Where do I even start?

I have been reading and reading and am completely overwhelmed by the amount of information, please can someone give me some advice? I have had many credit cards over the years, and car finance, and at one point a store card. How do I start to find out if I was charged PPI? Is there a quick and easy letter template I can send? I can't even remember half of the finance companies 
I tried with Bank charges and was unsuccessful, so wondering whether it is worth even trying? But something keeps me wondering... what if ...:undecided
